Solomon and his friend Ion begin to prepare an abandoned gold mine for a long-term stay.

SS Commandant Kurt Sperl arrives in Sighet to oversee the deportation of all its Jewish residents. Solomon and family escape into the gold mine.
Under suspicion for helping the Markowitz family, Sperl captures and interrogates Ion, who commits suicide rather than divulge their location.
